Many problems — decay between teeth, infection at the root, impacted wisdom teeth — can't be seen with the naked eye. A dental X-ray shows what's happening inside the tooth and jaw so treatment can be planned properly.
How much radiation?
A small dental X-ray uses a very low dose of radiation — far lower than many other medical X-rays. Dentists take X-rays only when they're needed to diagnose or plan treatment.
How you're protected
- X-rays are taken only when there's a clear reason
- The beam is aimed only at the area being checked
- A protective apron or collar may be used
- Modern digital sensors need less exposure than old film
Pregnancy
Always tell your dentist if you are or might be pregnant. Routine X-rays are usually postponed, while X-rays needed for an emergency can be taken with extra precautions.
