Many people only visit a dentist when something hurts. But most dental problems — cavities, gum disease, even oral cancer — start silently. Regular check-ups catch them while they're small, quick and inexpensive to treat.
The six-month rule
For most adults and children, a check-up and professional cleaning every six months is a good routine. People with gum disease, diabetes, a history of frequent cavities, or who smoke may benefit from more frequent visits.
What happens at a check-up
- Examination of teeth, gums, tongue and soft tissues
- X-rays when needed to look between teeth and under fillings
- Scaling and polishing to remove tartar
- Personalised advice on brushing, flossing and diet
Don't wait for your next check-up if you notice…
- Bleeding gums
- Sensitivity or pain
- A broken filling or chipped tooth
- A sore or patch in the mouth that hasn't healed in two weeks
