Your Child's First Dental Visit: A Guide for Parents

When should children first see a dentist, how to prepare them, and simple habits that prevent cavities in milk teeth.

By Dr. Akash Agarwal ·

A positive first visit sets the tone for a lifetime of healthy teeth. The good news: it's usually short, gentle and fun.

When to go

Bring your child to the dentist by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Early visits are mostly about prevention and helping your child get comfortable.

How to prepare

  • Talk about the visit positively — avoid words like 'hurt' or 'injection'.
  • Read a picture book about going to the dentist.
  • Book a morning slot when your child is rested.
  • Bring a favourite toy for comfort.

Habits that prevent cavities

  • Brush twice daily — a rice-grain amount of fluoride toothpaste under age 3, pea-sized from 3 to 6.
  • Avoid putting children to sleep with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Keep sweets to mealtimes rather than snacking through the day.
  • Help with brushing until about age 7–8.
