Bad Breath: Common Causes and How to Get Rid of It

Mouthwash only hides bad breath. Find out what really causes it and how to fix it for good.

By Dr. Akash Agarwal ·

Bad breath (halitosis) is embarrassing, and many people try to mask it with mouthwash or mints. In most cases, though, the cause is in the mouth — and it can be treated.

Common causes

  • Bacteria on the back of the tongue
  • Food trapped between teeth
  • Gum disease and tartar build-up
  • Untreated cavities or broken fillings
  • Dry mouth, smoking and tobacco
  • Onion, garlic and strong spices (temporary)

What works

  • Brush twice a day and clean your tongue daily
  • Clean between your teeth every day
  • Drink plenty of water to keep your mouth moist
  • Get a professional cleaning to remove tartar
  • Have cavities and gum problems treated

If bad breath continues despite good oral hygiene, it can occasionally be linked to sinus, throat or stomach problems, and your dentist may suggest seeing a doctor.
