Dental Care During Pregnancy: Is It Safe?

Pregnancy hormones affect your gums. What's safe, what to expect, and how to look after your teeth while you're expecting.

By Dr. Akash Agarwal ·

Many expectant mothers worry that dental treatment could harm the baby, so they postpone check-ups. In fact, looking after your mouth is an important part of a healthy pregnancy.

How pregnancy affects your mouth

  • 'Pregnancy gingivitis' — swollen gums that bleed easily, due to hormonal changes
  • Morning sickness exposes teeth to stomach acid
  • Cravings for sweet snacks increase the risk of cavities

Is dental treatment safe?

Routine check-ups and cleanings are safe throughout pregnancy. The second trimester is usually the most comfortable time for any needed treatment. Always tell your dentist you're pregnant so they can plan treatment and medicines accordingly.

Tips for expectant mothers

  • After vomiting, rinse with water and wait about 30 minutes before brushing
  • Keep brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and clean between teeth
  • Choose healthy snacks such as fruit, curd or nuts
  • Don't ignore dental pain or swelling — get it checked
