Teeth can last a lifetime with good care. As we get older, though, some problems become more common — and they can affect eating, speaking and general health.
Common problems
- Dry mouth, often as a side effect of medicines
- Decay at the roots where gums have receded
- Gum disease and loose teeth
- Worn or broken teeth and old fillings
- Sore spots from ill-fitting dentures
Staying comfortable
- Use a soft brush; a thicker handle can help if gripping is difficult
- Sip water through the day and ask about dry-mouth products
- Clean dentures daily and take them out at night
- Keep regular check-ups even if you have no natural teeth
Missing teeth can make it hard to eat a balanced diet. Dentures, bridges or implants can restore chewing and confidence.
