Hidden Sugars in Children's Snacks

Biscuits, juices, flavoured milk and 'healthy' cereal bars can all feed tooth decay. How to spot hidden sugar and choose better snacks.

By Dr. Akash Agarwal ·

Most parents know sweets aren't good for teeth. But a lot of sugar comes from foods that don't look like sweets at all.

Where sugar hides

  • Packaged fruit juices and flavoured milk
  • Biscuits, cakes and rusks
  • Breakfast cereals and cereal bars
  • Ketchup and sweet sauces
  • Sticky dried fruit eaten between meals

Read the label

Ingredients like sucrose, glucose, fructose, corn syrup, jaggery and honey are all sugars. The higher they appear in the ingredients list, the more the product contains.

Better snack ideas

  • Fresh fruit
  • Roasted chana or peanuts (for older children)
  • Plain curd
  • Cheese
  • Vegetable sticks
