Teething: A Guide for New Parents

When do babies' teeth come in, what are the signs of teething, and how can you soothe your baby safely?

By Dr. Akash Agarwal ·

Most babies get their first tooth around six months, though anywhere between four and twelve months is normal. All 20 milk teeth usually arrive by about age three.

Signs of teething

  • Drooling
  • Chewing on fingers and toys
  • Red, swollen gums
  • Irritability and disturbed sleep
  • A slightly flushed cheek

Teething doesn't cause high fever, diarrhoea or rashes — if your baby has these, see a doctor.

Soothing your baby

  • Let them chew on a clean, chilled (not frozen) teething ring
  • Gently rub the gums with a clean finger
  • Wipe away drool to prevent a rash
  • Avoid teething gels with numbing medicines unless advised by a doctor
