Oral cancer is one of the most common cancers in India, and tobacco — smoked or chewed as gutka, khaini or paan with tobacco — is its biggest cause. The good news: when found early, it is far more treatable.
Warning signs to watch for
- A mouth ulcer or sore that hasn't healed in two weeks
- White or red patches on the gums, tongue, cheeks or palate
- Difficulty opening the mouth fully, or stiff bands in the cheeks
- A lump or thickening in the mouth or neck
- Unexplained bleeding, numbness or pain in the mouth
These signs don't always mean cancer, but they should never be ignored. A dentist can examine the area and refer you for further tests if needed.
Other effects of tobacco on the mouth
- Stained teeth and persistent bad breath
- Gum disease and tooth loss
- Slower healing after extractions and other treatments
- Higher risk of dental implant failure
